Nine days after the Aug. 11 derecho, about 63,500 NIPSCO customers are still without power, and Gary has the latest restoration target: 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Gary is Indiana's largest Black-majority city, and it is last on the utility's restoration list. How long a Black city waits in the dark — and whether aid actually reaches families keeping medical equipment running — is an equity story, not a weather brief.

Neighboring cities on earlier restoration dates, and residents who can reach 211 or the state's $5,000 disaster grants.
